EPIK-General Program

The English Program In Korea (EPIK) hires and trains English teachers for public elementary, middle school and high schools in South Korea. The schools are located in the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces:

  • Metropolitan cities: Seoul, Incheon, Sejong, Daejeon, Daegu, Busan, Ulsan, Gwangju, and Jeju

  • Provinces: Gyeonggi, Chungnam, Chungbuk, Gangwon, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, and Jeju island.

To be an English teacher with a public school via EPIK, you must meet ALL the following qualifications:

  • Be a citizen of a country where English is the primary language: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and United States

  • Must have studied from the junior high level (7th grade) and graduated from a university in one of the six designated countries listed above. EPIK teachers must also have resided for at least 10 years or more in a country where English is the primary language.

  • Hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university

  • Be mentally and physically healthy

  • Have a good command of the English language

  • Have the ability and willingness to adapt to Korean culture and lifestyle

  • Have teaching experience or TESL/TEFL/CELTA certification

Salary and other benefits:

  • Salary: 2.0-2.7 M KRW/month

  • Free round trip airplane ticket and more! – 1.3 million KRW of entrance exit and another 1.3 MKRW of exit allowance

  • Salary: 1.8 to 2.7 Million KRW/Month

  • 300,000 KRW of settlement allowance

  • Free furnished single housing and basic household goods including a bed, a table, and chairs, a wardrobe, a gas stove, a refrigerator, a washing machine, a microwave oven, and a TV set

  • Over time teaching: 20,000 Won per 60 minutes

  • Multiple school allowance: 100,000 Won per month (if a teacher teaches at two schools)

  • Korean National holidays 10 days per year

  • Paid vacation: 18 working days per year, some provinces have up to 5 weeks vacation

  • Sick leave: 11 working days

  • Medical Insurance and national pension plan – 50% furnished by employer and 50% by applicant

  • One-month severance bonus at end of 1-year contract

  • Contract renewal allowance: 2 million KRW

  • Tax Exemption: 2 years of income tax exemption (except Canadian and Irish)

Working Conditions:

  • One-year contract job

  • Job start dates: February, March, April, August, September, and August

  • Teaching hours: 22 hrs per week

  • Working hours: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM (Mon ~Fri), 40 hours per week. NO WEEKENDS!

  • Location: You will be matched with a specific school within the province or metropolitan city of preference after your documents are received


  • To assist Korean teachers with their English classes or jointly conduct English classes.

  • To conduct English conversation classes for Korean students and teachers

  • To prepare teaching materials for English language education

  • To assist in developing teaching materials for English language education

  • To demonstrate a good command of the English language, both written and spoken

  • To perform other duties as specified by the host POE (Provincial office of Education)
